Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 12-16
1. Solomon is a wise man that could solve any disagreement with someone . Two women came to him with a child and both of the women were claiming to be the mother of the child. Solomon suggests that they cut the child in half knowing that the real mother would rather give up her baby than see him split in two. His plan worked and the real mother got ownership of the child. Huck remember that the widow taught him this from the bible and tries to explain that Solomon didn't really want to cut the kid in half. Jim couldn't understand why he wanted to cut a kid in half because half a child isn't good for anyone.
2.Huck does a joke in saying that what happened the previous night were all a dream and Jim starts to interpret the dream after some convincing but eventually the joke is over and Jim sees what's really going on and gets upset at Huck. Because Jim reacted in the way he did shows that he actually cares for Huck and is worried about making it to safety and freedom. So my view on Jim is that he cares fr Huck and gets worried about them making it to where they want to go that when Huck plays a joke on him he gets upset because he knows what is at stake and is worried that Huck isn't taking it seriously.
3. Jim is superstitious because he is black and at that time they were not educated. There for all that he has heard or learned about would be the superstitions or myths of good fortune.
4. When Huck said that it shows that he is hesitant to go against what societies view on black people and that they aren't anything but slaves because he would have to put himself "below" Jim and be humble towards him when apologizing. Yet Huck feels bad for playing a joke on him and apologizes to him for doing so, afterwards he says that he isn't sorry that he did apologize. This also shows that Huck is beginning to see Jim as a human being.
5. Huck has become closer with Jim and sees him as a friend and doesn't want to loose him but on the other hand he knows that if he helps Jim escape he would be breaking the law so he is confused on what to do. Ms. Watson did so much for him so he feels bad for helping Jim escape from his rightful owner but Jim tells him that Huck is his only true friend. He continues to decide on what to do and realizes that he will feel worse if he turned Jim into the authorities and decides that it would be best to let Jim escape.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 17-21
1. The Grangerford family may be respectable, but they live in a world of fear and hate. They've had a hardcore feud going on with the nearby Shepherdson clan for about thirty years, and each family is objective is to kill off the others, one by one, until no one's left standing. Even Buck Grangerford, a boy that is the same age as Huck's age, has violence on his mind all the time.
2. I think that they may have added farmer vs rancher in to the story because back then they may have been different from each other for example the rancher could of been the one that is running the farm and giving everyone commands and the farmer would've been the one to actual work but in my eyes I see no difference. But there were many rivalries between farmers and ranchers because one ranchers were dominant in having a lot of land for crops and taking care of fencing for there livestock and other things around there land which made farmers mad back in the 1800's. 3. How the narrator plays a role is he describes the battle between Grangerford and the shepherds and how there war kinda started. Also Huck saw a lot of stuff with people dying that might make him loose some of the story because he probability cant get the deaths out of his which means he could be scared. 4. The king is a man that pretends to be the British preacher and duke plays along as the deaf brother. The old man then reveals his true identity as the dauphin, the long lost son of King Louis XVI of France. Huck and Jim then wait on the men and call them “Duke” and “Your Majesty,” respectively. Huck quickly realizes that the two men are liars, but to prevent “quarrels.” 5.Huck and the group that he was with faced a lot of challenges one being that most of the time they had to travel at night so that Jim wouldn't get caught. But Duke had a great solution which was that they would start traveling in the morning and if they got caught they could tell the people that they were bringing Jim back so they wouldn't be waiting anymore time during the day sitting around. This was a risky task because Huck could have gone to jail for this. |

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 22-26
1. The last statement on the handbill would get people into the play because more men would be open to doing things of their choice if their wifes didn't have a say in their decision to attend the play. This would give the husbands/ fathers endless freedom because their wives and kids can't come.
2. Huck doesn't see the use in telling Jim about the fact that the King and Duke aren't telling the truth because Jim doesn't know a lot about Kings and Dukes in the first place, he also doesn't see the use in telling Jim because he doesn't want Jim finding out that the reason he is playing along with the King and Dukes story is to protect Jim from being caught.
3. When Huck mentions the phrase “you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.” he is comparing the King and Duke to real royalty and the way they act compared to what Huck thinks he knows about royalty. Throughout the story, Huck explains multiple examples of historical royalty and how they have tricked people throughout their "royal positioning".
4. The King and the Duke came up with this plan when they had found out that a man named Peter Wilks had died and left a fortune to his brothers that no one had ever heard of. The two con-men, being as greedy as they are, pretended to be the brothers and made Huck and Jim act as their servants. They wanted to sell the land and gain all of his money from the dead man instead of it going to his brothers. Huck was ashamed and disappointed in himself about lying and stealing from the grieving family.
5.When the King gave his speech, his British accent was not good or believable. The Doctor said that it was the worst accent that he had ever hear. He knew that the King and Duke were con-men and were definitely not related to Peter Wilks which, they seemed to know peoples name in town but didn't really proof that they knew anything about Peter himself.
6.The King and the Duke were going to run of with the $6,000 in gold, they don't end up leaving in the middle of the night. Instead the King comes to think it would be a good idea to stay until the land as well as the slaves are sold, therefore they can get more money than they have already gotten.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 27-30
1. The reasons that people stayed up with the dead was to the protect their body from anything that would ruin them and how it looked They wanted to make sure that the body was kept safe. After a person died in the 1800s, they had to bury the body the very next day because at that time there was no way to preserve the body.
2. Huck could not bear to see Mary Jane as upset that she was when she was reacting to the slaves family being split apart. She was extremely upset and Huck had noticed this, he also knew she was struggling with the death because Huck saw her crying alone at night by the casket.
3. The test showed that the King and the Duke were frauds but the King complained to the lawyer saying it wasn't accurate since the real Harvey's hand was broken, and his brother serves as a scribe to him, people wouldn't be able to prove who is who. Then the real Harvey says that he knows of a tattoo on his brothers chest that no one else would know of. He also says that the man who dressed the body would back him up on it. Both the King and Harvey give detailed descriptions of the tattoo, the undertaker who dressed the dead man reveals the truth that he had no tattoo.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 31-35
1. Huck wanting to pray for forgiveness for helping Jim escape. In the 1800s it was illegal to help a black person escape their owner. Although, it wasn't just any slave it was Jim, Huck was very close with Jim and couldn't help himself to do anything but help Jim. He knew it was wrong and tried to pray for forgiveness
2. Huck decided to write a letter to Tom telling him to let Miss Watson know where Jim is at. He wrote the letter but then in the middle of praying he remembered how kind and good of a friend He was, then decided he would rather take the chance and go to hell in order to stand by Jim. He tore up the letter so that Miss Watson would never know where Jim is.
3. Huck was disappointed in Tom but he was also surprised and caught of guard by the new actions Tom is showing. Tom Sawyer went from being a guy who wanted to create a gang to steal and kill people, to helping a slave escape. It may not seem like a big deal but it was a huge deal in the 1800s. It's sad that it was like this back in the day black people were all by them selfs.
4. A: “Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.”
B: “But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t got no sense, and just goes for him anyway.” Huck is talking about the fact that it was partially his fault that the King and the Duke got caught and tied to a rail by their feet. Even though they were not good people he still felt like he was their friend and showed kindness to one another. But at points he's been let down by many others in his life time.
5. Tom and Huck chose to free Jim in a much more difficult way than was necessary, Huck proposed his plan but Tom responded back saying it was too simple and wouldn't draw anymore attention than breaking into a soap factory.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 36-40
1. In the process of breaking Jim free, Tom's motivation is how much fun he could have. Tom is the kid who is always seeking for adventure or trouble you could say. When Huck first asked Tom to help him get Jim back, he was all for it but as they started the mission he didn't take it seriously. In Chapter 36 Huck states: "Tom was in high spirits—he said it was the most fun he’d ever had in his life, and the most intellectual time too. He said he wished we could keep doing this for the rest of our lives, and then leave Jim to our children so they could have fun breaking him out too. He thought Jim would like it more and more as he got used to it." From this, you can definitely tell that Tom is not taking this seriously. His only motivation is the fun he will have and that he could leave it for someone else to keep doing. On the other hand, Huck's motivation is to set Jim free. He wants the better life for him instead of keeping him held captive as a slave.
2. In Chapter 37 Huck and Tom are talking about being "Let on" When they say that phrase they are meaning that they are pretending, pretending that what you are saying isn't really happening. As an example, during chapter 36. Huck and Tom were preparing a certain witch pie. They state: "We let on it took nine months to make it" Meaning, they pretended it had taken them 9 months to make. Basically, they were pretending that breaking Jim out was harder than it actually looked. They also pretended that the things they did together took more time and effort than it actually was.
3. Uncle Silas tells Aunt Sally that Jim had run away and she began to panic because apparently their house is wild and no one has control over it. Tom writes letters to the family under the name of "an unknown friend", the letters that were sent out to the family scare them and states that they could be in trouble. Tom then pretends in one letter that Jim is going to be taken and explains to the family on how Jim plans on being stolen.
4. Satire is shown by making fun of reality and we see satire when Huck and tom help Jim escape. Huck wants to make the escape easy and Tom wants to make it hard and complicated. In reality, it would be hard to have Jim escape. So many things can go wrong during the escape. The book makes it seem easy and hard to believe that they would pull it off.
5. When Huck says "I knowed he was white inside" he mean that Jim has a heart for Tom because Jim refused for the boat to go until they got Tom a doctor. Jim thinks that Tom would probably do the same for him.

Huckleberry Finn: Chapters 41-end
1. In this part of the story Huck ran into Uncle Silas in town when he was finding the doctor for Tom. Uncle Silas took him back to the house and Huck made up a story as to why Tom and Huck were gone, they believed it. When Huck said he was going to bed Aunt Sally followed and tucked him in as if she was his mother. Huck then felt guilty and couldn't look her in her eyes because he knew that Tom was stuck in pain and in danger while he was sleeping in a bed. I also think Huck felt this way because he knew that he lied about Jim and everything and could tell that in the end he was hurting the family rather than making things better.
2. Aunt Sally sees Tom being carried on a mattress with the with the help of the doctor and a tied up runaway slave (Jim). She presumed that Tom was dead but he eventually woke up. Aunt sally asked the doctor what had happened and he explained that when he had got to Tom that he realized he couldn't get the bullet out on his own and he needed help but he wasn't going to leave the bot there on his own. He went onto explain that Jim said he could help save Tom and get the bullet out of his leg. So overall this is an example that Jim has come closer to Tom and Huck and cares a lot about their health and overall safety and would do anything to save them even if it puts his freedom at risk. They all agreed that Jim acted with kindness and that without him putting his freedom at risk then Tom would've been dead.
3. Throughout the book we have notices a pattern in Tom's love for adventure and how often he is will to do anything for the trill of it. So when he wakes up and tells everyone of Miss Watson's death and that Jim was already a free slave and that him and Huck were simply freeing something that was already free just proved that he was more in it for the adventure rather than the reward itself. Also the fact that he kept the secret that Miss Watson had died and Jim was free just further proved that he seriously would do anything for the adventure, including freeing something that is already free.
4. Huckleberry Finn is the kid who wants to do everything by himself. At the beginning of the book, Huck knows he doesn't want to be with the Widow. Who has given him the best and everything he needs, nor does he want to be let alone with his father. So he does everything in his power to escape. I think Huck is a good kid, yes he makes mistakes but all kids do. He always tries to find a solution to things and make things better. Huck was very brave. And seeks for the adventure like Tom Sawyer. From the beginning of the book, you could tell he looked for adventure in every situation. He was a smart kid. He faked his own death and escaped and kept himself alive. Not only being a kid, but he was also very thoughtful kid and would look for peoples needs like trying to find a doctor for Tom or helping Jim out even though it put him in risk because many people would think differently of him. Huck is a good kid.
